May 5, 20245/3/2024 When Managers Set Unrealistic Expectations, Employees Cut Ethical Corners, Dina Gerdeman, April 30, 2024 This article discusses how corporate misconduct starts with managers creating unrealistic expectations, and the employees start making unethical shortcuts. This paper is relevant to the work of Professor Lynn S. Paine at Harvard Business School, who finds it appropriate to emphasize that ethics are an imperative for the entire organization. The most emphasized point is that organization factors, be it the management practices or the environment, influence individual behavior as well as the manner of making ethical decisions. The cases of Sears Auto Centers and Beech-Nut Nutrition Corporation are proof of how management decisions can compel individuals to adopt unethical practices. The most astonishing fact is that despite increased awareness and the existing ethics and compliance programs, corporate malfeasance still persists. In fact, the article in reference finds that many of these high-profile cases of corporate malfeasance originated from managerial decisions, not the few bad actors. This is clear proof that the systemic problems within the organizations must be addressed if future ethical lapses are to be avoided.

April 19, 20244/21/2024 How to Keep Employees Productive: Support Caregivers, Kara Baskin, January 23, 2024 This is about keeping employees and managers productive, which is not an easy task. So much can be achieved through the right leader and yet it can be diminished through the wrong leader. This article discusses how to keep employees productive and how we can support caregivers as well. This article goes on to highlight how comforting and supporting caregivers and employees can change the kind of job that we do. Some of the diverse ways that I have learned from this article are job costing. Companies can meet the need and some tips on how companies can support caregivers like understanding the cost of benefits. where you would look on how the things that you do in the actions that you create cost the benefits of your company. Another one was revisiting job descriptions, career paths, and managerial incentives where you look at the person in that position and see if they are fit for it and if requirements truly matter. I truly believe that any company with any employees in any profession can be productive, and supporting specific employees and caregivers in that company can really add to the overall productivity and planning of the company's future. This article has taught me the various tips and tricks that you can use to improve your company and build it from the ground up.
April 12, 20244/14/2024 The Clock Is Ticking: 3 Ways to Manage Your Time Better, Kristen Senz, August 28, 2023 This article considers how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the workplace and uses the data to identify three strategies for improving time management at work. Taking into account where and when you work, cutting down on meetings to increase happiness at work, and taking breaks from work are some of these tactics. It goes without saying that the leadership and organizational facets of the management principles are related to these organizational strategies. Managers can demonstrate their leadership by putting these tactics into practice to reorganize the workplace in a way that is more productive and friendly to employees. The tactic of cutting meetings to make work pleasant caught my attention. This is, in my opinion, one of the easiest and most effective tactics to put into practice. According to the article, employees who waste time in lengthy, dull meetings lose interest in their jobs. They may also experience more emotional exhaustion during and after meetings if they participate in "surface acting," which is the practice of seeming to feel a certain way in order to fit in. Managers can encourage their staff to be more productive and happy by cutting meetings short or utilizing alternative channels of communication like emails or notes. Intriguingly, the third idea—taking a vacation from work to increase productivity—was also raised. Without a question, taking breaks from one's work life is crucial, and studies have shown that occasionally changing environments can have a favorable effect on both professional and personal outcomes. In order to prevent burnout and give workers enough time for themselves while they are employed by the company, managers can further improve the work environment by granting their staff members extra paid time off and break days. I thought this article was really interesting to read and that it connected well with the subjects we covered in class.
April 5, 20244/7/2024 What Kind of Leader Are You? How Three Action Orientations Can Help You Meet the Moment, Ben Rand, July 5th, 2023 In a large organization, or even a small one, leadership has a critical role in determining output quality and productivity. The conceptual, analytical, and relational action orientations are the three types. When a problem arises, conceptual leadership refers to attempting to examine external factors rather than the issue at hand. Analytical leadership is the tendency to respond to a situation based on the available information. Last but not least, relational leadership entails that a leader begins to consider and carefully consider how issues may impact others in their immediate vicinity as well as the other parties involved. These orientations can be quite beneficial for leadership and for determining the best time to provide certain information and navigate difficult situations. This article has taught me that there is always a certain kind of leader, regardless of the organization or industry you work in. It's more important how they deal with others and themselves in difficult situations than how powerful they are. The ability to manage issues that some people would find impossible to handle is a necessary quality in a leader. All things considered, a blend of relational, analytical, and conceptual talents are needed for effective leadership. A well-rounded leader is able to foster strong relationships within the company, make data-driven decisions, and comprehend the larger context. Leaders that embrace these varied leadership philosophies are better able to adjust to changing circumstances, motivate their groups, and overcome obstacles with courage and resiliency.
March 22, 20233/26/2024 Have We Lost Sight of Integrity?, Bill George, January 27, 2024 This article exposes well-known politicians and businessmen for their dishonest and deceptive actions intended to mislead the public. It also makes an effort to clarify what integrity in the workplace actually entails and the detrimental effects of letting these irresponsible attitudes steer our economy. Throughout the entire piece, the author's perspective on honesty and his response—as a CEO—to his staff members' errors at work caught my attention. Numerous instances that the author brought up concerning the poor behavior of significant leaders are the result of their inability to take responsibility for their acts and their feeble attempts to hide their errors. For instance, when Congressman George Santos lied during his campaign and broke campaign financing regulations. Santos gave the definition of integrity as "telling the truth" in response to a question about it. In opposition to this viewpoint, the author states that integrity is not the absence of dishonesty. No matter how unpleasant, we need all the knowledge to solve problems. He continued by saying that he makes it plain to his staff members that they will not be dismissed for making errors; rather, they will be fired for attempting to hide their errors. In my opinion, this is the most significant lesson to be learned from this article. A more productive, moral, and accountable workplace would result from CEOs relieving their staff members of the burden by not punishing them for errors and offering tools to improve their working environment. Furthermore, the futures of their firms would undoubtedly be better off if CEOs themselves learnt to accept responsibility and work to solve rather than hide their issues.
March 1, 20243/1/2024 "Successful, But Still Feel Empty? A Happiness Scholar and Oprah Have Advice for You" Avery Forman September 12, 2023 The article was about finding purpose in means other than success. The bigs ideas are thinking about thinking, metacognition (at your work), and investing more in relationships as well as faith. To me, this article describes the dlimena of many successful humans in the world. Oftenly, people get caught up with life and forget to enjoy the jounry instead ot the destination. I loved when the article talked about forming relations with others as a way to find purpose. Life is beautiful when humans come together and appreciate each other, I completely agree with the notion of needing close friends and family.
In the future, I'll use this knowledge to remeber that life is short, sweet, and that I need to appreciate everything. The purpose of life isn't success, it's happiness. 1.2 Discussion Board Activity2/22/2024 I've always believed in work environments that it is best to act professional at all times, and I've always felt the need to act a certain way; sometimes even faking a personality to please a person or group of people. After reading the article "Seven Useful Interpersonal Skills You Absolutely Need To Learn" it made me realize that apart of being a ideal employee or manager is building social connections, and being able to grow personal connections with those around you. The opposite of my belief was true, people find it exhausting to fake a personality all day long and when you break that barrier it allows for you to become more comfortable with each other. In the future, after this realization, I'll be sure to be confident and put out the truest version of myself
Digital Citizenship2/20/2024 Digital Citizenship: "Digital citizenship is the ability to navigate our digital environments in a way that's safe and responsible and to actively and respectfully engage in these spaces." This is important because as our society moves further with technology, we as the users must be able to use and access the internet without making everlasting mistakes. No one wants to permanently have their perception ruined or be "canceled" over something that was posted years ago. The positives of posting online are most definitely entertainment, information, and communication. The internet has endless sources of entertainment that pertains to everyone's personal hobbies and interests. Also, instead of going out to a library searching though hundreds of books, the internet has all the research you could need right at your finger tips. Furthermore, instant communication is undoubtedly the most useful thing digitalizing our society has created. With many positives comes many negatives. All of these negatives come from improper use of the internet; misinformation, permanency, and hate. As useful as the internet is with fulling us with knowledge, its important you know what you can and can't trust. Utilizing certain websites and always double checking is very important. Everything on the internet is permanent, nothing is completely deleted no matter what you see or believe. This can cause regret and impact your future by saying something that you know you shouldn't of. Lastly, hate can be hard for some people to deal with. Whenever you post something alone with the supporters will be people that hate for no reason, making you want to feel as bad about yourself as they do. Overall, being a responsible digital citizen comes down to being a law abiding citizen that is aware of their actions and the potential consequences. The T.H.I.N.K acronym was created to help users with this.
